In the 168 hours of any given week, I spend a lot of time consumed by magazines. I dedicate about 10 hours to journalism classes and assignments. Another 15 or so account for Drake Magazine, of which I’m the Editor-in-Chief. Twenty are spent as an editorial assistant at Midwest Living magazine. And if I’m really lucky, I may even snag an hour or two on the weekends to relax with one of my favorites.
It’s intense, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Hello! I’m Melissa Studach, a magazines major diligently balancing a collegiate magazine, an internship, and the responsibilities of a full-time student. Every day—if not every hour—I become more engaged in the industry thanks to the opportunities Drake University and Meredith Corporation have provided me.
As the Editor-in-Chief of Drake Magazine, I understand the process of a print publication. I have experience in macro- and micro-editing stages as well as completing all the finishing touches, like writing the perfect hed and dek combo or TOC blurb. In the past couple of years, I’ve also gained experience on the digital side. I understand the importance of keywords and SEO—not to mention a strong social media campaign. My work in both print and digital mediums has allowed me to understand the crucial elements of each.
I specialize in home design and lifestyle content. I truly believe a well-designed space leads to a well-designed life, and I love getting to share the creative, collected stories that fill a home. With minors in marketing and entrepreneurship, I also venture into business writing now and again. When I’m not writing or editing, I enjoy browsing antique shops, reading non-fiction, listening to podcasts, and playing host to friends and family.
